What is the IES ?

The IES ( Institute for Environmental Sciences ) was established in 1990 at Rokkasho village, Aomori prefecture, Japan.

IES is an institute for studying the environmental and human safety of radiation and radionuclides.

Why in Rokkasho ?

The local public had concerns about effects of radiation on environmental safety and human health when Rokkasho/Aomori accepted the foundation of the Spent Nuclear Fuel Reprocessing Plant.

In response to their concern, the Aomori Prefectual Government enthusiastically requested the Japanese Government to establish an institute which conducts research on radiation safety for the environment & human health.

In 1990, IES was inaugurated in Rokkasho village as a juridical foundation by the then Science and Technology Agency (present Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology).

Through spreading the knowledge obtained from the research to the public, we aim to promote scientific understanding on radiation safety for the environment & human health.
