- IES was established as a foundation by authorization of the Prime Minister of the Government of Japan.
- Dec.6, 1990
- IES started work by creating Department of Planning and Administration, First and Second Research Departments at on-site temporary office in Rokkasho.
- Oct. 1992
- IES created Third Research Department.
- Mar. 1993
- IES finished construction of administration and research building (present Main Building).
- Apr. 1993
- IES reorganized the research departments to Department of Radioecology, Department of Environmental Simulation and Department of Radiobiology.
- Mar. 1995
- IES finished construction of the Low-Dose Radiation Effects Research Facility.
- Mar. 2001
- IES finished construction of the Closed Ecology Experiment Facilities, the Artificial Climate Experiment Facility and substation facilities receiving special high voltage electricity.

- IES newly created gPublic Relations and Research Information Officeh and gConstruction Office for Bio-Sciences Research Centerh.

- IES finished construction of the First Research Facility, the Advanced Molecular Bio-Sciences Research Center.

- IES finished construction of the First Research Facility, the Advanced Molecular Bio-Sciences Research Center.
- IES newly created Advanced Molecular Bio-Sciences Research Center and dismantled the Construction Office for Bio-Sciences Research Center.

- IES transferred to a Public Interest Incorporated Foundation by authorization of the Prime Minister of the Government of Japan.
