IES was established as a foundation by authorization of the Prime Minister of the Government of Japan.
Dec.6, 1990
IES started work by creating Department of Planning and Administration, First and Second Research Departments at on-site temporary office in Rokkasho.
Oct. 1992
IES created Third Research Department.
Mar. 1993
IES finished construction of administration and research building (present Main Building).
Apr. 1993
IES reorganized the research departments to Department of Radioecology, Department of Environmental Simulation and Department of Radiobiology.
Mar. 1995
IES finished construction of the Low-Dose Radiation Effects Research Facility.
Mar. 2001
IES finished construction of the Closed Ecology Experiment Facilities, the Artificial Climate Experiment Facility and substation facilities receiving special high voltage electricity.
Apr. 2001
IES newly created gPublic Relations and Research Information Officeh and gConstruction Office for Bio-Sciences Research Centerh.
Oct. 2004
IES finished construction of the First Research Facility, the Advanced Molecular Bio-Sciences Research Center.
Apr. 2005
IES finished construction of the First Research Facility, the Advanced Molecular Bio-Sciences Research Center.
IES newly created Advanced Molecular Bio-Sciences Research Center and dismantled the Construction Office for Bio-Sciences Research Center.

IES finished construction of the Second Research Facility, the Advanced Molecular Bio-Sciences Research Center.

IES incorporated gPublic Relations and Research Information Officeh in gDepartment of General Affairsh.
Apr. 2012
IES transferred to a Public Interest Incorporated Foundation by authorization of the Prime Minister of the Government of Japan.
IES reorganized the research departments to Department of Radioecology, and Department of Radiobiology.
